What do you love most about your job?
The wide diversity of work and never knowing what new challenge might pop in the doors. Working with good people is awesome too.
Tell us about a work-related success story that you’re proud of.
I love to see happy customers who are excited about the work we’ve done for them. I also like seeing the work I develop out in the marketplace on products and packaging.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love being outside, mountain biking, paddling, fishing, hunting, backpacking. Pretty much anything that involves heading deep in the woods with no cell service.
Describe an interesting hobby or pastime that you have.
I have a quiver of hobbies to occupy my spare time. My two main hobbies are my girls, Laurel and Rosie and whatever they want to get into. Currently we are working on paddling the full length of the Conestoga River. If I do find myself with some solo time you might find me fixing something, blacksmithing, building trails, or roaming the woods.
What’s something surprising that not many people know about you?
I’m color blind. Which I guess is surprising considering color is a big part of what we do.
Do you follow any sports teams?
Nope
What are some of your favorite local spots to visit?
Locally I spend a good deal of time on all the local trail networks. I also like paddling on the Susquehanna River, and hiking in the wilderness areas of Blue Mountain.
What’s something that you’ve always wanted to try or learn?
Mind reading and time travel would be quite handy, but probably will not happen. Really, I’d like to perfect the skill of flint knapping – shaping rock into prehistoric tools as the native Americans did.
Tell us about a personal success story that you’re proud of.
I love teaching kids about the wilderness and seeing them grow and learn through their experiences in nature and the outdoors. I don’t know if I will ever know the impact this has on their lives, but from the smiles I see on their faces I think it’s working.
How has your role evolved since you joined DavCo?
I started out doing design, photography and photo editing. As I worked, I started exploring different aspects of design, I waded into logo creation, technical illustrations, and pretty much any other type of visual or print related challenge I could find in the path along the way. I like problem solving, trouble shooting and hands on work. I also got into the behind-the-scenes aspects of prepress software with Trueflow and Apogee. I’ve enjoyed the challenges along the way and look forward to new ones.
What’s the best trip you’ve ever been on and why?
Kristen and I spent a week deep in the Adirondacks canoeing on a mountain lake and its tributaries. That was a lot of fun.
What’s your favorite memory from working at DavCo?
There are so many, I think the one that stands out the most was the move from Gap to Kinzers and how huge the new building felt back then.
What would you like to learn or improve in the future?
I love to learn new things and find ways to make things better, more efficient, and most of all simpler. I hope to continue this trajectory with my work and pick up new talents and skills along the way.
What is one thing you can’t live without?
My Family
If you could visit any place in the world, where would it be?
I would love to go back in time and see America in its natural state before it was settled and civilized.
What does your typical day at DavCo look like?
I like to start early before the sun is up and get as much as I can much done before the phones start ringing and the front doors open. As the day goes by, I work on whatever comes across my desk. I like creating, moving, solving problems, and making things work better.
Tell us about your family / kids / pets.
Kristen and I have been married for 13 years. I have two daughters; Laurel is 7 and Rosie is 5. We have a dog Trigger, two geckos, and multiple fish tanks currently. Our house seems to have an open door policy for animals. The girls love animals and are always raising or rehabilitating something; salamanders, frogs, turtles, ducks, possums, bunnies, fish, cats, and anything else that they come across in their travels.
Anything else you’d like to add?
DavCo is a good place full of good people. I enjoy working here and being able to try my hand at all the different aspects of what we do.
